One of the cases that has been preoccupying Greece in recent days is that of the rape and prostitution of a 12-year-old child by a 53-year-old man, who presented himself to her circle as a benevolent angel helping the child of a poor, fatherless, large family. The case is horrific in itself and even more horrific is the fact that there were 213 men on a list stating their interest in raping the child and several others who were already doing it. They will of course claim that they did not know the child’s real age and that therefore it was not rape but paid sex.
This case in itself makes any normal person want to vomit. But it seems that the number of normal people, rational thinkers, and those who keep their sense of humanity and their awareness of certain values intact, is dwindling. Or for some reason, instead of hearing their voices, we are hearing the voices of others.
A ‘circus’ is being set up surrounding the case, with the media leading the way. Watching this media circus unfold, the question as to why the monsters have been emboldened and evil has been normalised almost becomes clear. A columnist for Kathimerini wrote: “Let the nobodies and the thick-skinned deal with child molesters. The issue of the day is the opening of the Metro in Piraeus.” And the [Greek] development minister republished this in his tweet. A comedian blamed the mother for not paying attention to what her child was doing and wondered what she herself was doing: “Was the mother flying a kite?” How could they possibly consider that she works and has eight children to look after? A TV channel called the father of the arrested rapist and pimp so that he could praise his son, who was a gentleman, with a comfortable upbringing and had no need to exploit the girl for money (apparently not even because of a sick perversion). Another channel showed pictures of the girl with her face supposedly hidden. Another called a union cop known for the theories he always develops, who said: “The child molester is a very good person, prominent in society and with a good life, with a particularly good wife, who is also a prominent citizen, and a son, a very good boy…” At least he called him a child molester.
As a result, the responsibility is being shifted onto the victim and her family. And the spectators, the listeners, rally around their own kind, making such a horrible event seem normal. And one thing follows another. Even the Nazi salute performed by the father of a minister at the Golden Dawn trial passes for a normal gesture.
