This is the world we live in. And it will worsen as people and societies become arenas of destructive confrontation. This is probably what those who threw us into the dark well of social media had in mind. Where everyone believed they acquired a public voice and authority. Where there is the illusion that we intervene in developments and gain companions. And what happens in the end? Those who are “like-minded” on one issue become “enemies” on another. And no, this is not the fermentation of ideas. This is a quagmire in which everyone swims without realising how easily it sweeps them along and how imperceptibly they change to be “pleasing”.
And so simply, the sworn enemies of Israel – openly or covertly – rejoice at Iran’s strikes. Without realising that this hatred emanating from the conflict is what sustains and reinforces the policies they reject. And the fanatical opponents of Iran’s theocratic regime, equally openly or covertly, celebrate Israeli or American strikes. Without them, too, realising that this hatred keeps in power a regime which, to a large extent, the country’s citizens reject. Ultimately, the fuel of hatred and mutual destruction that both need to survive is also provided by us, the distant observers, but who remain permanently omniscient about everything happening in the world.
In this place, it took decades to realise that absolute truth does not exist. We grew up within the logic of confrontation, of good and evil, victim and perpetrator. And much had to happen, our eyes had to see much more, before we finally realised that the “absolute truths” we were fed for years cannot provide solutions to what we experienced and still live through.
But it seems we do not change. And perhaps that is why we do not move forward. Because if every time we load our insides with emotions that touch or exceed the limits of hatred, these will guide us in all the challenges we face. And then we will simply be looking again for a seat in the bleachers of our choice…
