NOW WE HAVE HOPE

Three concepts emerged victorious from the outcome of this election:
Dignity…
Solemnity…
Reputation…

Of course, Tufan Erhürman won.

Without his knowledge, sensitivity, wisdom, and his unifying and responsible political stance, such a result could not have been achieved.

But the following is also clear:
They have played with this society’s dignity, reputation, and will to a great extent in recent times…

Every time, they said, “You are not the one to decide”… They said, “You have no say.”

A ‘strange’ policy was invented and packaged through the two-state argument. It had no political basis, no foundation… There was a narrative but the reality was far different from it…

As we became more alienated from the land we live on, they shouted, ‘state!’… They did not see that we were a minority, they used this to scare us… They secured contracts for themselves… They wove corruption… As we bred our longing for our children, they spread fears that have remained from the times of Cold War… They lied, and they lied a lot… They tried to cover up all the corruption and banditry with a flag.

They mocked history, politics, and the law.

What’s more, every day they behaved a little more brazenly, a little more casually, a little more frivolously…

Without caring about their own people, distancing themselves from the country they lived in, they thought that by relying solely on the power of the AKP, or the MHP, they would achieve results.

They didn’t speak up when people were arrested; they turned a blind eye when people were detained at the airport and sent back by plane.

As life became increasingly expensive, they just indulged in their own pleasures, using the resources of society for their own supporters. Their shamelessness and brazenness knew no bounds…

This result goes beyond Tufan Erhürman winning an election…

A society has reclaimed its hope.
It has reclaimed its self-confidence…
It has reclaimed its voice, its words, its heart.

It said, “We are here”…
It united, it bonded, it did not separate, it did not divide.

With Tufan Erhürman, it reclaimed hope, hope for the world…

It felt genuine pride in itself, in its country.

I hope this election marks a new turning point. Of course, the real success is for Turkish Cypriots to meet the world; a solution in our shared homeland, a secure and hopeful future.

Is it that easy?
Perhaps not…
But at least now we have hope.

Who lost?

  • The ‘culture of intervention’ from Turkey lost.
  • The myth that ‘election results change in the last 48 hours’ lost.
  • The ‘remote-controlled’ UBP-DP-YDP Government and the cabinet of Üstel lost.
  • Under normal circumstances, the ‘government’ should have resigned immediately… This message was not received, again…
  • The ‘two-state resolution’ in the Parliament lost — and not just any kind of loss; it was not ‘two separate states’ but ‘a federal partnership based on the equality of two founding states’ that was approved.
  • Ambassador Başçeri lost; once again, with his attitude that undermined his diplomatic authority… Hopefully, this will serve as a lesson to the ambassadors who will follow.
  • AKSA’s media lost with its lies, polls, manipulations, and provocations.
  • GEZİCİ lost! But this was the second act of lawlessness… I hope this time there will be real consequences.
  • The imported campaigners have lost; they mocked with people’s intelligence. The politics of fear lost along with them…
  • The visitors who came and went, the football players, the pop stars, the hodjas, the nobles, the ignobles lost…
  • Ersin Tatar lost terribly, while this country lost five whole years…
  • The system of instructions lost; representation won, against surrender…

Who Won?

  • I wrote which values won first.
  • Politically, CTP also won with Erhürman… But most importantly, TDP, Harmancı, independent MPs, Serdar Denktaş, trade unions and organisations won through solidarity, a culture of joint struggle…
  • In the north of Cyprus, patriotism won out over the ‘Cypriot-Turkish’ divide. The sensitivity, understanding, and empathy of the people rooted in these lands…
  • In Professor Tufan’s words: fellowship won.
  • Success in local government won in particular; from Kyrenia to Nicosia, from Kythrea to Famagusta, from Mesaoria to Dikomo… The impact of good service greatly changed the voting climate.
  • Independent, alternative, free media won against patronage journalism and the guardianship of interests…
  • Turkish Cypriots won, those who say “there is another country here,” regardless of their place of birth.
  • The hope for ‘partnership’ on the island won again, once more…
