Support from the south has been expressed for the goals outlined by President Tatar at his press conference in Ercan Airport prior to his participation in the meeting of the Economic Cooperation Organization! This support came from the political party Liberation 2025, whose founding meeting was attended by Archbishop Georgiou from the south.
This is because, Mr. Tatar stated in his remarks at Ercan that no one could force him, or his policy, into a discussion of federation at the upcoming five-party summit in the first half of July. The demand made in this statement aligns with the founding principles of the newly established political party ‘Liberation 2025’ in the south. They also oppose the Federation on the grounds that a Bi-Zonal, Bi-Communal Federation would dismantle the ‘Republic of Cyprus and subject Cyprus to the Turkish rule’.
Mr. Tatar and the party in question are in agreement on their opposition to the Federation. However, their reasons for opposition are supposedly different. Mr. Tatar claims that a federal solution would place Cyprus under Greek Cypriot dominance. The Federation-opposed party, which also includes the Archbishop of the South who attended the founding meeting, states that the Federation will ‘Turkify the island and place it under Turkish rule.’
Different reasons, but the same goal. This is to undermine the federal solution, which still has the potential to create a basis for a mutually acceptable agreement in Cyprus based on the 1977-1979 Summit Agreements and relevant UN resolutions.
This is the approach of those in the south who hold a hegemonic and usurping mindset. Those in the north also seek to undermine a solution based on the coexistence of the two communities and political equality with a separatist goal. Who said that the opponents of federation in the south and north are in an antagonistic conflict? They are united in their efforts to prevent a solution based on the 1977-1979 Summit Agreements and UN Parameters.
They are united not only in their opposition to the two communities, but also to the development of a peaceful dialogue between the peoples of Turkey and Greece, who are condemned by history and geography to live side by side.
This incident also once again demonstrated the importance of secularism. The absurdity of the Archbishop in the south participating in such a political meeting as a religious leader and delivering a speech serves as a reminder of the value of secularism.,
