WILL TURKEY SAY ‘SOLUTION’, OR ‘CARRY ON LIKE THIS’ IN CYPRUS?
Turkey – European Union (EU) relations were discussed at an important meeting in Ankara last Friday.
Does Turkey want full membership of the EU, or not?
Will the EU embrace Turkey, or not?
-*-*-
In order to fully answer these questions, it is necessary to comprehend some issues very well…
For example, the ‘Kurdish question’ is a very important matter in Turkey-EU relations…
Will the PKK lay down its arms?
Will an agreement similar to, or resembling the one in Northern Ireland be reached?
Does the Turkish President really have good intentions in his project to overcome this problem?
Are the Turkish nationalists giving this responsibility to the president in order to minimise a possible nationalist delirium?
Will this delirium diminish?
-*-*-
In the EU-Turkey relations, there are some other important problems…
Turkey’s rating in the EU is very low in terms of democracy, rule of law and human rights…
-*-*-
But most important of all, the ‘Cyprus’ policy pursued by Turkey has nothing to do with the policy imagined, or ‘accepted’ by the EU!
-*-*-
Moreover, let’s make a note here, in the draft of the UN report that will extend the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus until January 2026, the emphasis on the parties to hang on to the ‘FEDERAL’ solution is noteworthy…
-*-*-
In other words, the argument that ‘the EU and the UN don’t support a federal solution anymore’ is a total lie!
-*-*-
Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, was in Ankara last week…
Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Kallas stated that there are differences of opinion between the EU and Turkey on Cyprus…
“There is great potential for co-operation in a wide range of areas such as trade, innovation and counter-terrorism, but there are differences, especially on issues such as closing the gaps around Cyprus and Russian sanctions,” Kallas said…
-*-*-
Turkey-Russia relations are the EU’s most emphasised and even most sensitive issue…
At this point, there is general acceptance that Turkey has a position close to Russia, and this position may seriously get affected by the results of a possible Trump-Putin meeting…
-*-*-
Turkey does not look favourably on ‘some kind of federal state structure’ designed for Syria by the French-German influenced EU, UK and USA…
Turkey wants to end the Kurdish problem at home, but does not want a ‘Kurdish state’, or even a ‘Kurdish region’ in Syria!
-*-*-
And let’s come to another vital issue…
The ‘confusion’ and even ‘threats’ between Turkey and the Republic of Cyprus over the Block 5 of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone are also in the air…
But is it only the ‘Republic of Cyprus’ that Turkey is facing here!
No!
The EU is there precisely because there is a question of restricting a full member state…
-*-*-
So who else is there?
In Block 5, drilling activities were given a start last Friday by the American ExxonMobil and Qatar-Energy companies…
Turkey said “we cannot accept it”; the Sözcü newspaper announced the drilling with a rather ‘provocative’ headline yesterday…
Sözcü used the title, “we dived into our agenda, the Greek Cypriots dived into our territory”…
Is it the Republic of Cyprus that is ‘intruding in our territory’?
Or, Qatar and America?
-*-*-
Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulides said that the drilling is part of Cyprus’ strategy to strengthen the EU’s energy security and contribute to the diversification of energy sources, and that Cyprus aims to become an alternative and reliable source of natural gas for the EU…
According to Turkey’s nationalist newspaper Sözcü, Block 5 belongs to Turkey!!!
What does Nicos say?
‘EU’, he says, “EU’s alternative and reliable source of natural gas”!!!
-*-*-
And what about us?
In other words, where are we in our region, or within the framework of international relations that concern us?
-*-*-
Recently, a foreign diplomat, whose term of office was completed, visited Ersin Tatar to say goodbye…
The foreign diplomat and his team were kept waiting for 45 minutes by Tatar…
-*-*-
Then, when he came, he neither apologised to the people for the delay, nor said a word about it!
And in the middle of the conversation, he suddenly stood up and said, “I have to go on the street and collect some votes” and left!
People waited for him to come back!
Then when he didn’t come, they left!
-*-*-
What more shall I write?
What more can I tell you?
-*-*-
Turkey, in the midst of its many problems, has made great efforts for the election of Tatar in favour of the continuation of the current order, or the lack of a solution in Cyprus…
Tatar, for the sake of his seat, did everything the two hobos said, wasting the future of his own community!
So, will Turkey’s attitude change in the context of the problems and difficulties I tried to explain above?
-*-*-
Will Turkey say ‘solution’, or ‘carry on like this’?
The answer to this question remains uncertain!
-*-*-
When I look at the way things are going, I say “Turkey will opt for solution” but I am not sure!
