This, after all, is the greatest victory of the system. The fact that some people have managed to convince an entire society that politics is the same as incessant demagoguery, lies, corruption, ridiculousness, and incessant lying.

“Yes, but it’s our painting, we can make it any colour we want”, was the answer of my goddaughter, who was nearly five at the time, when, to her question as to what colour to make the tree in the Christmas painting, I pointed out with an adult’s certainty that trees are green. This reminded me how much more clearly children think before they enter an education system that, instead of broadening their horizons, fills them with ‘certainties’ or makes them part of a society that imposes on them a way of thinking that most of the time is little different from absolute absurdity.

Just the opposite of this is always the reaction of friends whenever the conversation turns to the political situation in the country. Every discussion about corruption, interwoven interests, unaccountability and scandals always ends with the phrase “that’s politics”. This was the conclusion of a conversation with friends when Nikos Christodoulides managed to renege on every one of his election pledges in less than six months, when he filled the Presidential Palace with relatives and friends and the independent institutions with members of his staff. This was the outcome when DISY positioned itself in opposition, yet conveniently kept ministers as its members and its MPs shuttled back and forth to the Presidential Palace. It was in opposition to itself and at the same was co-governing as part of the opposition. When AKEL ranked the Cyprus problem as its first priority, but was quick to claim partnerships with the rejectionist front in every election.

The outcome was the same when EDEK rejected the budget, believing it would pass and voted for it when it realised it would not, or when Nicholas Papadopoulos described the DISY government as the most corrupt ever and then expressed his readiness to cooperate with the right-wing party in the new government. The same outcome when the President and the Cabinet declared that the way the cost of living allowance is granted is unfair and creates distortions in society but touted as a huge achievement the fact that it would continue to be granted as it stood, resulting in gains for them and losses for everyone else. The same too when government and parliament were making cuts to the municipalities due to overstaffing and excessive costs while at the same time increasing the number of local government officials and doubling the costs. The same too whenever the trade unionists cashed in their party affiliations with scandalous salaries and lump-sum payments beyond all reason, while education reform was side-lined so as not to annoy the teachers, whenever independent institutions were made a plaything in the hands of those in power, and whenever the government turned the state apparatus into a governmental one. In an astonishing way, the refusal of the political system to function in a rational and beneficial manner for society has always been set within the context of political realities.

This is ultimately the greatest victory of the system. It is also our most glaring defeat. That some people have managed to convince an entire society that politics is the same as incessant demagoguery, lies, interwoven interests, sterile images, ridiculousness, in other words, anything other than the production of policies. Most importantly, however, that this wretched state of affairs is not only inevitable but more or less imperative. That it is all right for union “vested rights” to be prioritized over the basic needs of vulnerable groups. That it is acceptable for the President to promote legislation and give pay rises to himself and his ministers. That it is a necessary evil for MPs to participate in Parliament as representatives of their offices. That it is all right for the Archbishop to “appoint” the Minister of Education (keeping education in the middle ages) and act as if he is above the law, tearing down and building wherever and whatever he wants. That the level of politics is obscene, the way society operates is unfair, but what can we do? That’s the way it is. We have to live with it. Because politics is corruption, just as trees are green.

But the country and the way it is governed is our painting. That is why everything we consider to be right should have a place in it. Every citizen should pursue their interests from the same starting point, the state should work for the many, and education should be a vehicle for changing the things that trouble us, not for ensuring their continuation. In no circumstances should the realities justify politics being synonymous with lies. Unaccountability and corruption should not be treated as a necessary evil. Politics should be able to be moral. For some inexplicable reason, we have for years hidden the pencils deep down in the drawer and allowed a few, just a few, to create their own painting on our canvas, deciding on the colours with the certainty of a custodian. At the end of each year we look for the positives that this leaves us and each time we list fewer and fewer of them. We expect little and look forward to even less. The “new” is nowhere to be seen. Because this requires a plan, a clash with the old, moral political power, independent institutions, and education on modern lines. On the contrary, the view that nothing works becomes every day a belief that the fairy tale of change still conceals many monsters.
