Ajeewan Sadasivam, a Sri Lankan taxi driver tells the BBC that he has been waiting in line in front of a petrol station in the capital Colombo for the past two days…<\/p>\n

\u201cI sleep and live in my car. Sometimes I leave to get food and then return to keep waiting. I haven\u2019t been able to shower for days,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

We aren\u2019t there yet!<\/p>\n

A kilo of meat now costs \u20ba250 …<\/p>\n

A tub of yoghurt is now sold for an average price of \u20ba50<\/p>\n

A litre of a good bottle of alcohol costs around \u20ba400 …<\/p>\n

Charcoal, pitta bread, and salad ingredients cost twice or even four times more than they used to last year…<\/p>\n

The price of soft drinks has also gone up…<\/p>\n

A small bottle of mineral water costs \u20ba5!<\/p>\n

A family of four going to the beach, paying \u20ba150 each for entrance; to drink a bottle of coke for \u20ba40; pay \u20ba180 for a hamburger; \u20ba400 for petrol to drive to and from the beach, \u201cthat\u2019s half of a minimum wage\u201d…<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s going to happen?<\/p>\n

Yes, we will need to save…<\/p>\n

And we have to learn to do so…<\/p>\n

But where is this going to end?<\/p>\n

We will have fewer barbecues…<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t be going on holidays or day trips…<\/p>\n

And naturally, the number of unemployed will grow.<\/p>\n

Unhappiness will hit the roof…<\/p>\n

The crime rate will rise…<\/p>\n

Divorces have increased significantly already and will continue to increase…<\/p>\n

Well, then what is the solution?<\/p>\n

The solution, for example, could be to study Cuba…<\/p>\n

To seriously lean towards developing tourism…<\/p>\n

Adopting a socialist planned economy…<\/p>\n

Our resources are very limited…<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t know the exact population…<\/p>\n

We can\u2019t plan, we aren\u2019t planning…<\/p>\n

We wait for \u201cTurkey to provide\u201d but she too is unable to give us anything…<\/p>\n

We are saying that \u201cthe Cyprus Problem must be solved\u201d, they, on the other hand, insist on an \u201cequal sovereign state\u201d so that it may never be solved…<\/p>\n

That beautiful city named Istanbul, according to international law and according to national \u201claw\u201d belongs to the Republic of Turkey.<\/p>\n

Sir, what about the issue of ownership of individual properties in Istanbul?<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a separate matter…<\/p>\n

Varosha, within the framework of international law, is a territory whereby individual problems are resolved in a mutually accepted fashion.<\/p>\n

To \u201cobject to this\u201d, is just as irrational as thinking that \u201cConstantinople is still Hellen property\u201d… Not just \u201cirrational\u201d; but beyond that, \u201cunlawful\u201d…<\/p>\n

Well, then what will you do?<\/p>\n

For example, you could sit down, discuss and return these properties to their legal owners…<\/p>\n

Settle this matter in a proper and lawful manner and you could earn the right \u00a0to open Ercan to direct flights…<\/p>\n

If you insist on continuing the debate that \u201cVarosha belonged to my grandfather\u2019s foundation\u201d, then you might be left with no other choice but to respect our sweet lady\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n

If you insist on \u201cgetting down to the core of the matter,\u201d instead of \u201csolving the issue and being happy together\u201d then make room for Charles Darwin; who knows, you could be forced to grant \u201cproperty rights\u201d to apes or even single-celled organisms!<\/p>\n
