{"id":9525,"date":"2023-05-21T09:22:20","date_gmt":"2023-05-21T06:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/penna.cydialogue.org\/?p=9525"},"modified":"2023-05-25T19:54:27","modified_gmt":"2023-05-25T16:54:27","slug":"an-equal-sovereign-state-or-utter-hogwash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/penna.cydialogue.org\/an-equal-sovereign-state-or-utter-hogwash\/","title":{"rendered":"AN EQUAL SOVEREIGN STATE OR UTTER HOGWASH?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>Two equal and sovereign states!<br \/>\nThat is what Tayyip Erdo\u011fan is saying!<br \/>\nAnd ours is repeating it!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>In other words, they consider both the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus \u201cequal\u201d and \u201csovereign\u201d too!<br \/>\nWell, that\u2019s a lie!<br \/>\nThis is a big lie!<br \/>\nAnd this big lie is clearly evident!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>There is no point in mentioning the Organisation of Turkic States&#8217; latest meeting in Uzbekistan!<br \/>\nThe state you claim to be &#8220;equal and sovereign&#8221;, abbreviated as the TRNC, is null and void in &#8220;international law&#8221;!<br \/>\nBut let\u2019s move on from that!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>Yes, let&#8217;s move beyond that!<br \/>\nOkay, &#8220;international law is flawed&#8221; &#8230;<br \/>\nFine, &#8220;UN Security Council resolutions are biased&#8221;&#8230;<br \/>\nOkay, &#8220;the world is bigger than the five&#8221; [<em>Translator\u2019s note: Quote from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan regarding the permanent members of the UN Security Council<\/em>] but how do you explain the issue of &#8220;sovereignty&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>For example, do you really believe that the TRNC is &#8220;sovereign&#8221;?<br \/>\nOr do you enjoy making jokes so much?<br \/>\nWhat sovereignty my dear brother?<br \/>\nThe sovereignty of what?<br \/>\nBoth its political will and democracy resemble a &#8220;chained bicycle&#8221; &#8230;<br \/>\nYou only ride the bike if its owner turns up, brings the keys or gives you the code!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more&#8230;<br \/>\nForget about international law and the fact that sovereignty is under occupation!<br \/>\nSince we mentioned bicycles, come let&#8217;s focus on this issue&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>For almost a year, I have been taking daily 4-5 kilometre-long walks&#8230;<br \/>\nThree months ago I also added cycling to my routine&#8230;<br \/>\nSometimes I ride 8 kilometres, sometimes 14 kilometres&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Why 8 kilometres? Because the distance between my home and the supermarket in South Cyprus where I go to buy meat is 4 kilometres.<br \/>\nThe round trip is 8 kilometres in total!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>So, why do I buy meat from the South?<br \/>\nThey use the Euro in the South&#8230;<br \/>\n10 years ago 1 Euro was equivalent to 2.2 Turkish Liras &#8230;<br \/>\nToday, 1 Euro is nearly 22 Turkish Liras&#8230;<br \/>\nThe decimal point has been erased!<br \/>\nDespite this, the price of meat in the TRNC is almost double the price of meat in the South!<br \/>\nBy the way, it&#8217;s not because I particularly love pork, but it&#8217;s worth mentioning that pork is cheaper compared to lamb and beef.<br \/>\nAlso, the price of chicken is almost the same [<em>on both sides<\/em>]!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s come to the story behind the 14-kilometre ride and why it is 14 kilometres!<br \/>\nWell, those who know, know&#8230;<br \/>\nThere are three crossing points in Nicosia&#8230;<br \/>\nTwo of them are only for pedestrians and cyclists&#8230;<br \/>\nOnly one is for vehicles&#8230;<br \/>\nOh, some vehicles do pass from Ledra Palace, but they need to belong to the UN and so forth.<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>One of the crossing points is Metehan also known as Kermiya or Aydemet [<em>Agios Dhometios<\/em>]! It has three names!\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The other is Ledra Palace&#8230;<br \/>\nI leave my home, cross through Metehan [<em>Agios Dhometios<\/em>], glide past the hippodrome in the South, pass by the courts, and the parliament, and then, say hello to the TRNC as I cross back through Ledra Palace!<br \/>\nApproximately 7 kilometres!<br \/>\nFrom Ledra Palace, I ride through Dereboyu [<em>Shakespeare Avenue<\/em>] to Yenikent G\u00f6nyeli [<em>Guenyeli<\/em>], another 7 kilometres!<br \/>\nMy math may not be as good as Devlet Bah\u00e7eli&#8217;s, but 7 plus 7 equals 14! [<em>Translator\u2019s note: Author makes reference to Turkish MHP leader Devlet Bah\u00e7eli\u2019s faux pas during a speech where he failed to add up the number of MPs correctly<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>Well sir, forget about the math&#8230;<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s talk about the roads!<br \/>\nThe roads in the TRNC are full of potholes!<br \/>\nI mean, they&#8217;re full of craters!<br \/>\nForget about the bikes, they cause severe damage to vehicles as well!<br \/>\nThe asphalt is cracked and worn out&#8230;<br \/>\nNow, what about the South?<br \/>\nIn the South, there are dedicated bicycle paths almost everywhere&#8230;<br \/>\nThere is a magnificent route in South Nicosia where you can ride your bike, exercise, and walk&#8230;\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 And the roads are sparkling clean!<br \/>\nThe streets are much cleaner!<br \/>\nThere is no litter on the sides of the roads!<br \/>\nThe houses are well-maintained!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>So, what about the TRNC?<br \/>\nThe minute you cross through Ledra Palace; and you&#8217;re going to ride your bicycle, may Allah protect you!<br \/>\nYou&#8217;re completely at the mercy of the car, minibus, lorry and bus drivers on the road!<br \/>\nWhat about Dereboyu? [<em>Shakespeare Avenue<\/em>]<br \/>\nTo be on the safe side and not die as an infidel you recite the Fatiha [<em>Surah Al Fatiha<\/em>], recite the Kelime-i \u015eahadet [<em>the Islamic declaration of faith<\/em>],<br \/>\nbefore beginning to cycle!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>You can make dozens of comparisons&#8230;<br \/>\nYou can compare&#8230;<br \/>\nYou can evaluate by analogy or by comparison&#8230;<br \/>\nUnfortunately, there is no equality!\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 You&#8217;re not equal in any aspect!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>For example, in South Nicosia, you won&#8217;t be attacked by any stray dogs or dogs with owners that freely roam the streets!<br \/>\nWhy?<br \/>\nBecause they don&#8217;t exist!<br \/>\nIn the TRNC?<br \/>\nThank God, in the past month, the dogs at Rauf Raif Denkta\u015f&#8217;s mausoleum haven\u2019t attacked me, but recently I witnessed them lightly attacking a group of women visitors from Turkey!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>We too have three dogs&#8230;<br \/>\nBut we don&#8217;t allow them to roam the streets and bark at anyone passing by!<br \/>\nThey bark from behind the fence and gate, and even then we feel embarrassed about it, but we don&#8217;t let them out onto the streets!<br \/>\nWe have at least 30 dogs, both owned and stray, living on the streets in our neighbourhood&#8230;<br \/>\nWhen they get annoyed, they bark and even attack people they don&#8217;t like&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>International law, sovereignty, public works, transportation, public transport, sanitation, schools, hospitals&#8230;<br \/>\nSo what are we?<br \/>\nSovereign and equal!<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s utter hogwash!<br \/>\nStop making up things!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Can artificial intelligence become president? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Recently artificial intelligence has become one of the most important topics&#8230;<br \/>\nIn the UK, British Telecom in the short term will lay off 10,000 people and replace them with artificial intelligence, with a future plan to replace 55,000 more!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>In Turkey, the second round of the presidential election will be completed next Sunday&#8230;<br \/>\nI say completed because the voting process abroad and, of course, in the TRNC already started last weekend.<br \/>\nFor example, Turkish citizens and voters can cast their votes in Famagusta and Nicosia until tomorrow&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>Especially if Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan wins the election, he will most probably give [<em>authority on the<\/em>] &#8220;TRNC&#8221; to one of his vice presidents or assistants, just like he has done in the past!<br \/>\nI hope he appoints the Head of Religious Affairs as his Vice President&#8230;<br \/>\nI just felt like saying that!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>But you know what I&#8217;m really curious about?<br \/>\nOr let me put it this way, more than curiosity, I have a humble suggestion&#8230;<br \/>\nIf Tayyip bey wins the election, let&#8217;s not elect a &#8220;President&#8221; in the TRNC anymore&#8230; We don&#8217;t need one, particularly like the current one!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>So what should we do?<br \/>\nSo what should Turkey do?<br \/>\nArtificial intelligence should be appointed as the head of the TRNC!<br \/>\nThis would be a nice, elegant and progressive move!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>Can\u2019t we?<br \/>\nWhy not?<br \/>\nLet it be the world\u2019s problem!<br \/>\nLet it be Nikos Christodoulides\u2019 problem!<br \/>\nIt wouldn&#8217;t be a problem for us at all!<\/p>\n<p>-*-*-<\/p>\n<p>All we would need to do would be to programme it to attend weddings, circumcision ceremonies, mosques, fairs, football matches, strawberry fields, and industrial zones, and occasionally visit Varosha; take walks in Bellapais in the mornings and take selfies&#8230;<br \/>\nThe rest is unnecessary!<br \/>\nOh, and it should feel intimidated by some of its potential rivals!<br \/>\nFor example, if it hears the name &#8220;Tahsin,&#8221; [<em>Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu<\/em>] it should get annoyed and say, &#8220;Alright, leave, leave&#8230; go!&#8221;<br \/>\nWhen someone says &#8220;\u00dcnal&#8221; [<em>\u00dcstel<\/em>], it should shout three times, &#8220;Get on with your work, come on, get on with your work!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[<em>Photo insert: showing<\/em><em> an empty bottle of whisky left in front of Rauf Denkta\u015f\u2019s mausoleum in Nicosia<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>A tender has been announced for the upgrade and completion of the mausoleum of the Founding President Rauf Raif Denkta\u015f. Dear H\u00fcseyin Amcao\u011flu, since his election as the mayor of G\u00f6nyeli [<em>Guenyeli<\/em>], has been trying without any success to clean up the weeds and remove the litter and rubbish here&#8230; I took this photo last Saturday morning&#8230; Someone had a drink the night before and left the bottle right in the middle of the open space&#8230; There are four or five dogs sleeping at the spot where wreaths are placed at the memorial, especially during hot hours of the day&#8230; They lash out if disturbed&#8230; There is a step or mini amphitheatre like structure in the back&#8230; It&#8217;s filled with vomit and beer bottles&#8230; But the most interesting thing is that someone tried to spin their car on the spot where the wreaths are placed!
