A POLITICAL TRANSFORMATION HAS BEGUN, MAY WE SUCCEED IN OUR ENDEAVOUR!

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ (GREEK) TÜRKÇE (TURKISH)

You can hear sentences such as, “Politics in the northern part of Cyprus is over – nothing good can come out of this country anymore”, and their similars in many places…

Moreover, members of political parties are giving voice to this idea!

Why are you in politics, anyway? Either take to the mountains and become a guerilla, start a revolution (!)

Or, go plant flowers or something, engage in your hobbies.

***

This view, which gained a new dimension with the addition of ‘water’ and ‘electricity’ to the politics of ‘Ankara packages’ – which was interrupted especially during the Annan Plan period and resumed in 2011 – signifies a state of total abandonment that links the solution of almost every issue to the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The final opinion, which is presented as an alternative to the solution of the Cyprus problem, in other words the unification of the north and south of the island under the umbrella of a federation, is unification with Turkey! Moreover, this is said by “those who have a concern for their homeland”.

In other words, if the Greek Cypriot side refuses to share the running of the country with the Turkish Cypriots – as it has been insisting for a long time – will we become a province of Turkey?

And will this whole process advance against our own will? Will everything happen automatically?

This attitude of total abandonment is already a problem in itself.

***

Opinion leaders who advocate the same idea and live in a world of “either solution or death” are also expressing “opinions” on a range of issues from education to health in the TRNC that contradict the opinion they express!

There is one thing that the spokespersons of this passive understanding, linking the solution of all our problems to the solution of the Cyprus problem, overlook, and that is that our daily problems continue.

Just last winter, cars were swimming in rainwater in Nicosia!

Just last year, tents were set up in public schools due to lack of space.

Just a few days ago, patients protested because there were too many problems in the hospital.

Of course, there are reasons for all of them.

However, a solution to all of them will not be possible with a federal solution agreement.

Who knows, maybe there will be even more after an agreement.

With such a perspective, issues other than the Cyprus problem become insignificant and obscured. Since they get obscured, we end up discussing people in politics, not actual proposals.

We live and will continue to live in the north of the island.

We get sick here, we receive education here, we drive on the roads here.

So we are ‘from here’.

We are the ones who need to solve the problems of ‘here’, not someone else.

It is precisely at this point that the universal language and politics of the left are needed.

What I mean is the discourse and politics of a “self-sufficient economy”.

And much more…

It is essential that it is provided with more content, that it becomes a comprehensive project and a solid step to be taken, and that it is explained to the public.

On the way to a solution of the Cyprus problem, ‘here’ is also in need of a transformation with the push of politics.

Are we failing?

In my opinion, we have a serious generalisation problem, and also a problem of ignoring every valuable and meaningful step taken.

All these years of experience in short-term coalition periods have demonstrated that problems do not go away by winning elections.

The idea that “either you will change the entire system, or you will become a representative of it” is also meaningless.

You can do good things without changing the system entirely, and without becoming a representative of it!

Step by step, little by little… Hasn’t it been done? I could list hundreds of works here, but they are not the subject of this article.

***

The ongoing process within the scope of the Cyprus problem will obviously remain frozen, which is a pity.

If an agreement emerges in the future with a change of leadership, what we are going to experience is clear.

We will proceed to a referendum and the establishment of a federal state, if only!

And that will probably take years… Look, there is talk of a 20-year-long process in Syria.

And what if nothing happens?

At that point, those who propagate the idea that “nothing good can come out of this country anymore” will probably take to the mountains (!)

What concerns us are those who would like to pursue transformation through politics

What do we need? There is an urgent need for a language of diplomacy.

Diplomacy and dialogue with everyone!

Yes, with Turkey as well! Most importantly with the south!

***

Our image, which has been discredited by right-wing governments, and relations, strained by Palace politics, should be brought back to where they should be through healthy diplomacy…

While these contradictions in politics continue, we are of course at the beginning of an end…

This break will affect us all.

Yes, UBP will leave and a new government will be formed.

We will elect a new President, it’s obvious.

Change will affect everything.

That newly formed government will take the sensitivities of each citizen as a guide.

The alternative politics of the left, which conducts politics on the basis of values, will shape the new era.

The way to move forward such concepts as self-sufficient economy, labour, civilisation, democratisation, peace and justice is through potent channels of dialogue and integration with the people!

On the street, in the coffee shop, at home, at work, in the Parliament, everywhere…
