According to polls — which is based on not hearsay, but direct information — Tufan Erhürman is leading the race.
Looking around, the prevailing opinion is: “Professor Tufan will win.”
But the truth is, people are mostly masters at giving people what they want to hear…
This country is also a bit of a ‘sweet-talking country.’That’s why there’s a race that is still going on.

So, what’s the situation like?
Tatar has become aggressive.
Awkward sentences, the language of imported advertisers…
Polemics, taunting, fear…
Signs of collapse.
Almost like an attitude of, “if we’re not in power, there will be a war”.
But the same people are granting 610 gun permits under the current system.
Against whom?
What is this ‘fear’?

The most amusing dialogue was this:
Tatar got upset when the young people didn’t applaud him enough… and then Ünal declared 2025 the ‘Year of Youth’ [Editor’s note: reference to the closing event of IV. Turkish Cypriot Youth Congress on 24th August 2025].
Three months later, the year is coming to an end (!)
The notary [Editor’s note: reference to Ünal Üstel] , chasing ‘T’ permits, land, and employment, forgot that the year was ending.
A friend of mine joked:
“It’s ok though, he could have declared 2024 too…”
Today’s kids are sharp!
Do you think they might fall for this move?

Even though the society’s agenda is filled with disgrace…
Let’s return to the famous ‘two-state fantasy world’.
I’ve been asking for five years now:
Which ‘two separate states’ are these?
They can’t even say ‘one is the TRNC’.
They’ve already given up on the desire for recognition…
Have you ever heard of this election promise?: “We will have the TRNC recognized.”
Let’s say one of the two separate states is the ‘TRNC.’
Which one is the other state?
They say ‘the Greek Cypriot Administration.’
Is that the state that will be declared?
If it’s the ‘Republic of Cyprus’…
Will we be a separate state, yet also a founding partner of the other state?
Well then, what about the guarantees?
The agreements guarantee the indivisibility of the ‘Republic of Cyprus’, as we know…
Most importantly…
What will happen to the Republic of Cyprus passports in their grandchildren’s pockets?
Will they be confiscated?
He can’t even control his own family!
So, when we separate, will whatever rights we have be abandoned?
They don’t want European Union membership anyway…
In fact, they are angry about the phrase ‘the north of the island will also become European’ for some reason!

The description of ‘low-profile leader’ by foreign journalists, diplomats and experts is not without reason.
Empty politics, ambiguity, rote nationalism, corruption covered up by flags…
When the concerns of the people living on the island regarding their identity, culture, personality, the future, their will are ignored…
What remains?

The states of election reveal this:
Professor Tufan’s determined, responsible attitude which involves trying to listen, understand and embrace everyone is finding a response.
A leader who does not fight, does not clash, does not succumb to provocation; who maintains his composure in all circumstances; who does not speak in the absence of accurate information, and who does not peddle illusions…
The majority sees Tufan Erhürman as a competent, capable ‘representation’ of themselves who will be respected around the world.

If only this election’s agenda could have included much more substantive discussions about the future of Cyprus.
If only we could have talked about peacebuilding…
Renewable energy, joint solar power plants, a future without borders, climate change, population planning, the living standards of developed countries, food security, new trends in education, social security…
If only we could have gone beyond ‘flag raising ceremonies’ in this day and age…
But the most frustrating aspect of the election remains the same…
The attempt to rely on foreign will, foreign power, imposition, and polarization…
For now, these attempts are met with reaction rather than impact…

Let’s go back to the beginning…
Professor Tufan is leading in public opinion polls.
But still, the election will be decided through face-to-face contact, persuasion, and determination until the last vote is cast.
The real question that remains is this:
On 26 June, Supreme Court President Bertan Özerdağ announced that the number of voters was 215,611.
When the election calendar started ticking, the number of voters went up to 217,056.
Is it normal for the number of voters to increase by 1,445 in just three months?
