Fortunately, circumstances worked in Cyprus’ favour this time and the United States of America has made our island one of the key instruments of its project to dominate the Middle East. That is why Washington surprised Nicosia on Saturday, October 26, 2024, announcing that they had arranged for President Joe Biden to meet with President Nikos Christodoulides in the Oval Office on Wednesday, October 30. From everything that transpired on Wednesday, it is clear that the State Department, through the American Ambassador here, made thorough preparation working out the best possible ways to fill the gaps that have made the Republic of Cyprus feel insecure in the foundations of its state due to a dramatic lack of defence material and the Cypriot people experiencing a continuous insecurity due to occupation.
As 30.10.2024 will probably be recorded as the most historic day since the RoC declared independence on 16 August 1960, we should note that for the first time Cyprus has the possibility of seeing a light of security, development and progress at the end of the tunnel. I wrote about this possibility in this column 130 days ago (23.06.2024), including the following among other things: “The legacy of the first President of the RoC, Archbishop Makarios, has been an unstable one, as it led to the tragedy of 1974, with many small tragedies preceding it due to the disastrous mixing of his own religious ‘infallibility’ with his byzantine political style that could create anything but a coherent policy for a newly independent state. It was a schizophrenic politics whose axis was the self-admiration of a priest who considered himself a revolutionary-politician. A mixture of Fidel Castro and John Kennedy. [… ] So instead of genuinely trying to build a new UN member state, he proceeded with the 13 Points, the Akritas Plan, which, as Sener Levent wrote many times – without anyone contradicting him – ‘was a plan for the mass annihilation of the Turkish Cypriots’, triggered the bicommunal hostilities – that his descendants still refer to today as the ‘Turkish mutiny’, annexed Cyprus to the Non-Aligned Movement under the influence of Russia and brought us up to the tragedy of ’74, with the puppets of Grivas and EOKA B and the treacherous coup leading to the Turkish invasion. All this in 14 years. […] The curtain of Cyprus’ suffering did not fall. There were a series of critical milestones. In 1978 the Anglo-American-Canadian plan, in 2004 the Annan Plan were two important opportunities for a solution that were aborted.
However, after 1974, a huge gateway opened for Cyprus, the accession to the EU, which aimed at a simultaneous solution of the Cyprus problem. Makarios’s descendants (see Tassos Papadopoulos) stumped it by fooling the international amphictyony. Thus on 1 May 2004 Cyprus became a full member state of the EU, with the acquis not operating in the occupied areas, but giving Cyprus the opportunity to operate on an equal footing within a powerful partnership of states that offers it immeasurable possibilities. At the same time, Nicosia was unwillingly freed from the Russian dragnet of both the Kremlin and the oligarchs who brought incredible wealth to the island and dependence on the dirty world of money laundering. This hung Cyprus on the pegs of international contempt to the point that Nicosia was actually forced to give the keys of the Finance Ministry to the USΑ which sent its experts here to check on us. Now a second gateway is opening for Cyprus with the establishment of the Strategic Dialogue between the USA and the RoC, which makes Nicosia a reliable partner for Washington.” A credible partner because Nikos Christodoulides, although heir to the minion of Russian oligarchs, realised that he cannot follow Nicaros’ [Editor’s note: reference to Nicos Anastasiades] path because he has already started to run out of his political fuel. The only one who can give him fuel to get to the elections and beyond may be the Strategic Dialogue, i.e. the USA.
What are we now being offered by the Americans? According to Deputy Government Spokesman Yannis Antoniou, “a solution whose quality and content creates conditions of security and stability and not cause something uncertain and unpredictable”. That is, in Washington, if we are assessing the situation correctly, they saw that Cyprus, now free of any blameworthy influences, can become an excellent base for controlling the situation in the Middle East with the advantage of being a member of the EU. Thus, as the American side informed the Cypriot side in Washington, they are making sure that we are guaranteed very basic tools for political and economic activity and sustainability, in exchange for an obvious control code. Because in our country there is a great NATO base, that of Akrotiri, with powerful weapons, and a powerful and very lucrative American project is about to be added.
What will they ensure?
- A solution for all Cypriots within the framework of a NATO security system even if we are on the periphery of NATO and not within it.
- Management of energy and technology funds, in which we have shown with the Chinese disaster at the Vasilikos Terminal that we are still susceptible to kickbacks.
- The other big Project that was in danger of being bogged down in the war of kickbacks was the port in Larnaca, which the USA will not let fall into the hands of the Chinese, like the one in Limassol.
- Still apart from Chevron-Exxon involvement in gas exploration, American investments will also be involved in the Interconnector following authoritative indications to make it a project of high capacity.
- Still upgrading Cyprus’ security forces in terms of weapons, equipment and training, on the model of a NATO force.
- Before the end of 2024 the visa for Cypriots to enter the USΑ will be abolished.
- Amalthea and Estia are two projects that give regional prestige to Nicosia but are not as important strategically for the USΑ.
The big bet for Washington now, in the context of its top objective (see protection of Israel and dominant position in the Middle East), is that what is being built in Cyprus will spill over into Turkey. So that Ankara’s benefits, which will be far greater and more important than those of Cyprus, will outweigh the loss of occupation and tilt Turkey towards the West.
