The very heavy ‘bill’ of Turkey’s sudden abandonment of the ‘federal solution’, which it had adopted as a ‘national policy’ before the 1960s, is becoming increasingly evident…
Mr. Tatar’s ‘parrot-like’ compliance with Erdoğan’s ‘separatist’ policy has caused great harm on the part of Turkish Cypriots.
In fact, it is possible to see this model of relationship, based on ‘subsequent consent’ in Turkish Cypriot politics, in every period.
Before the 1960s, there were those who complied with the English…
They served the Colonial Administration as ‘obedient servants’…
From the 1930s onwards, those defending the ‘Six Arrows’ [Editor’s note: The ‘six arrows’ represent the fundamental pillars of Kemalism, that are Republicanism, Folkism, Nationalism, Laicism, Statism, and Reformism.] the Kemalists, the fanatics of Turkey stood up against these ‘British henchmen’…
But they too have always overdosed on ‘servility’…
This bad legacy of the colonial period found reflection in the following periods and never allowed Turkish Cypriot politicians to form a more ‘autonomous’ political stance vis-à-vis the Turkish Republic.
‘Letting Turkey off the hook’ and ‘being in solidarity with Turkey’ became intertwined…
Turkish Cypriots have never been able to adjust the ‘dose’ of this stance in politics.
Often times, the leftist parties also failed to ‘establish good relations with Turkey’.
For this reason, over time, neither the ‘Qur’an Courses’ could be prevented, nor any ‘limit’ could be placed on the rise of minarets all over this ‘secular’ state, as inscribed in its Constitution.
Now, there are mosques and minarets inside university campus’ and at the foot of court buildings…
We have also normalized the university that screams ‘I am not actually a centre for science’…
And the rise of mosques and minarets in the courtyards that will keep the judiciary and the legislature in its shadow…
In the past, there were politicians, particularly like Bülent Ecevit, who recognised and respected the unique ‘political culture’ of Turkish Cypriots.
However, there were also those who thought of this place as ‘a three-ring circus’ and tried to rule it as they please…
The AKP, on the other hand, set out to ‘transform’ this piece of land—just as it did in Turkey—and went much further than previous Turkish governments. Of course, with the help of our above-mentioned ‘character’ traits, they achieved some remarkable success.
Our political institution, which resembles a ‘paper castle’, was levelled to the ground by a blow from Erdoğan…
Unfortunately, there has not been a serious ‘reaction’ at a societal level against Ankara, who said “The discussion on federation has come to an end”…
The AKP, in the process of interfering in the elections, almost ran over us like a steamroller with its ‘alaturca’ harshness.
He created an astonishing atmosphere of ‘surrender’ through a series of ‘reputation assassinations’.
That’s what he wanted, and that’s what he achieved.
Both in politics and amongst the general population…
In 2017, a politician emerged from this society who was able to resist these ‘policies of subsequent consent’, and insisted that Turkish Cypriots should be able to decide for themselves: Mustafa Akıncı…
Since 1987, Akıncı had been saying, “Jingoism based on the Motherland-babyland rherotic must come to an end, and TC-TRNC relations should be re-interpreted on the basis of mutual respect.”
In Crans Montana in 2017; he fulfilled the requirements for Turkish Cypriots to ‘decide for themselves’…
As Anastasiades also acknowledged recently, Akıncı took the initiative by respecting the ‘sensitivities of the Greek Cypriot community’, made proposals and contributed to the negotiation process.
However, just as it did not happen at the time of the Annan Plan, it did not happen again in Crans Montana…
At that stage, Turkey had signaled that it would show flexibility in its ‘the right of unilateral intervention’. This was also announced by the UN Secretary General.
However, when the process of Crans Montana collapsed, Turkey embarked on a very adventurous path. It reneged on its age-old thesis of federation, and adopted the ‘separatist policy’, formulated as the ‘two state’ solution.
And then here, they found a ‘local political figure’ who would tirelessly market this policy, day and night.
For the past five years, they have been carrying on with this ‘ceremonial’ politics in unison, based on pure ‘jingoism.
AKP has fully diffused into our society.
Politicians who had been serving as AKP’s ‘footman’ got used to this over time and bowed down.
Tatar, who said ‘no talks in the absence of recognition’, never felt the pressure of global public opinion in this process.
He freely marketed the ‘separatist politics’ as he wished. No one cared about this.
Tatar did not even feel the slightest bit of the international pressure that Denktaş received in the past.
UN Secretary-General Guterres, on the other hand, was contented with ‘managing the situation’ for ‘Erdoğan’s sake’.
This situation, of course, played into the hands of Christodoulides…
Thanks to Tatar, the man presented himself as a politician set out for ‘peace’ before the EU and the West.
For the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish side’s dream of ‘two states’ was like a perfect plate of ‘kataifi served with clotted cream’…
And Christodoulidis skimmed the cream of this setting.
He has achieved what no Greek Cypriot president has dared to do.
He has buried ‘strategic partnership’ with Russia in the past, and turned its face to the West, to the USA.
And he received more than enough in return.
From now on, the ‘Republic of Cyprus’ has a ‘security shield’ for itself with the army trained by the USA and superior weapons that will come from there.
Against whom?
Against Turkey, of course…
The Greek Cypriot side instantly took a position where Turkey has spoilt its relations, and expanded its ‘front line’ to protect itself.
Currently, France can act as it wishes in these lands…
Israel has taken the ‘Republic of Cyprus’ under its wings.
So who has made these international strategic steps of the Greek Cypriot side possible?
Undoubtedly, Turkey’s change of course and its withdrawal from the idea of federation, the Turkish Cypriot side’s withdrawal, and Tatar’s ‘Mr. No’ behaviour are the main reasons for these developments.
Unfortunately, the bill of the past five years has been very heavy.
Unfortunately, all this has cost us very dearly…
