THE END OF POLITICS

“Soon, however, we will realise that we could have made it better”

We have questioned politics extensively, and politicians even more so. The numerous economic, social and geopolitical problems facing the modern world have been and continue to be attributed to politics and politicians who consistently fail to rise to the occasion. Not unjustifiably, as the observation that there are no longer leaders with vision and sincerity is widely accepted. Just as true ideologies no longer exist.

The time has come to live without politics. Or, with less politics. And here we will realise how necessary it was, and how painful its sweeping rejection will prove to be. After all, politics has certain rules, historical knowledge and continuity and, ultimately, is influenced—whether it wants to or not—by a continuous social fermentation, which, at times, has the ability to shape it.

Now we will live in the era of businessmen. Donald Trump and his pals leave no room for doubt that we have entered an era where countries and the world are governed by billionaires who want to impose their own way of thinking and behaviour on the global political system. What is this approach? The audacity of money which—according to their perception—solves all problems. “He will expel the Palestinians and take over Gaza to turn it into a Middle Eastern Riviera”, “he will buy Greenland”, “he will impose tariffs wherever he fancies”… These are not politics. They are the whims of a class of people who have learned to view everyone and everything as a business activity. There are no people, only numbers. There is no History, only them. There are no rules; only the power of those who pay. And if the political system is to be blamed for anything, it is for giving a handful of people the opportunity to acquire such power, that they transform human civilisation into a circus performance with an expiration date.

We have questioned politics extensively. And not unjustifiably. Soon, however, we will realise that we could have made it better if we ourselves had become better. Rather than ending up in the hands of unscrupulous billionaires who wouldn’t think twice about reducing everything to rubble. Just for their amusement…
