THE TURKISH CYPRIOT COMMUNITY’S LAST 85,000 MINUTES!

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ (GREEK) TÜRKÇE (TURKISH)

I love surveys…

I believe that “surveying” public opinion in politics or commerce is extremely important for democracy and capitalism…

-*-*-

Let’s put aside capitalism and commerce…

Let’s take a look at politics…

-*-*-

A very reliable polling company recently carried out a survey for one of our political parties…

I don’t think it’s worth going into how many people were polled, their age groups, gender, and so forth…

-*-*-

But I was able to glance at the results, if we had snap elections tomorrow morning, CTP [Republican Turkish Party] would come to power on its own…

And if we were to hold presidential elections tomorrow morning, and if the CTP leader Tufan Erhürman were to run, he would win in the first round!

-*-*-

Which political leader or holder of a political post does the community trust the most?

The leader of the Main Opposition party Erhürman ranks top of the list by far…

Coming in second, again leading by a large margin is the leader of HP [People’s Party] Kudret Özersay…

For example, those currently in office, like the “President”, trail far behind Erhürman or Özersay…

In fourth place is the “Prime Minister” followed in fifth place by the “Parliamentary Speaker…”

-*-*-

There is no need for a survey or any opinion poll…

The President’s reputation has taken a serious hit…

This is the assessment made by everyone who attended UBP’s [National Unity Party’s] 47th-anniversary reception, based on criteria such as “the level of applause” and what took place at the event…

-*-*-

For example, Ünal Üstel [Translator’s note: leader of the ruling party UBP] received more applause than Tatar…

In fact, Tatar’s speech was nothing more than a screaming competition that no one barely listened to or applauded.

The whole country, including those who support UBP, no longer wants a president who talks funny like “Recep İvedik” or “Zübük” [Translator’s note: reference to oafish Turkish comedy movie characters] or who is everyone’s laughingstock, they are seeking a “refined” leader… This man has by no means been successful…

-*-*-

This is the common view that emerges from the survey and which is expressed by everyone on the street. Both clearly reveal that the president and the government have lost serious support.

As this is the situation, what needs to be done is exactly what the British do!

To admit, “We’re not able to do this properly” and resign!

-*-*-

Well sir, are “early elections” the solution?

Of course, it’s not a “definite solution” but it’s an inevitable requirement of democracy…

-*-*-

Well, should we be discussing a change of the “system”?

It’s clear that our current parliamentary system, compared for example to the presidential system in South Cyprus “isn’t working”.

I agree with the view that “we could be switching to a system like the one that is in place in South Cyprus.”

However, the “presidential” system in Turkey, or whatever it is called is problematic in terms of democracy…

-*-*-

Currently, we have an “unrefined leadership” and “government” controlled by a few civil servants appointed by Turkey.

It is extremely important in the name of democracy and in the name of the argument in favour of the “equal-sovereign state” which they keep harping on about, that this ineptitude of leadership is brought to an end.

-*-*-

Is there anyone who openly says that “this government is working and successful”?

Just themselves!

Can we define spending 8 million Turkish Lira for propaganda to promote the asphalting of an 800 meters long road as success?

-*-*-

Can admitting that a “mistake” was made on the birth date of an individual, whose name was published in the Official Gazette after being granted citizenship, be passed off as success?

-*-*-

Or, can the procurement of fuel [for the power plant] which they messed up, and that even spoiled the salt [Translator’s note: a Turkish saying describing something rotten], be seen as success?

-*-*-

Is allowing the use of the TRNC by human traffickers to traffick African students across the border a success?

-*-*-

Did you exert any effort for the opening of Ercan [Tymbou] to international flights?

No!

Is there anyone who is working to increase the number of crossing points and facilitate crossings from the South to the North?

No!

-*-*-

Well, then what do we have?

Let me finish off by touching upon the four most distinct issues that have emerged recently;

1 – A perception has been created that the construction of the Külliye [presidential complex] has started… But this Külliye will not be built, it will stop once the foundations are laid, even before it reaches the current incomplete stage of the Güzelyurt [Morphou] hospital because there is no money… The foundation-laying ceremony will be used by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his own election campaign… Just like the lie “we opened Maraş [Varosha]” …

2 – For the first time a Turkish imam has been appointed as head of the TRNC Department of Religious Affairs (he was granted citizenship in 10 minutes) and its budget has been raised to levels never seen before…

3 – A game was played that allowed a Turkish company named İçkale to sell fuel to Kıb-Tek [Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority] at extremely high prices and this game is still being played.

4 – The Halil Falyalı murder! The news reports and statements issued these past few days, I believe, hold the key to who might be behind Halil Falyalı’s murder and it’s not difficult to solve the case.

-*-*-

Long live the sovereign and equal TRNC and the grand posts of this grand state!

Of course, they should live long!

I wish them all a happy Sunday!

-*-*-

What will happen if we hold early elections and these losers go?

At least this Külliye charade, this pro-sharia attempts by the religious affairs department, and the ripping off of Kıb-Tek and of the rest of society will come to a halt…

-*-*-

Early elections, a new system, and a federal settlement?

Only then will the Turkish Cypriot community be able to look ahead and start rising…

-*-*-

An unsolved Cyprus Problem, every passing minute, results in the loss of a Turkish Cypriot…

We have 85,000 minutes left at best!

I don’t know if I’ve made myself clear.

[Photograph inserted of Derviş Ali Kavazoğlu]

Only a handful of Turkish Cypriot comrades have struggled for peace and brotherhood, for the rights of the working class in our country, and for Cyprus and Cypriots not to be divided… They were massacred by the mentality that saw “peace, brotherhood, workers, and Cypriots as its enemy.” …Derviş Ali Kavazoğlu was neither an enemy of Turkey nor Greece… But he believed that Cyprus should not be an island where the motherland countries or NATO gallivanted around… He had said, “Cyprus belongs to the people of Cyprus”… Just as Turkey belongs to the Turkish people, and Greece to the Greek people… It’s important to know Kavazoğlu well and not to forget him…
