WHY DO YOU MAKE AN ACTION WHEN IT IS OBVIOUS THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE A STEP BACK FROM IT?

The government withdrew the ‘Regulation on Rules and Discipline to be followed in Secondary Schools and Secondary Education Institutions (Amendment)’, which caused much criticism and controversy…

In order to resolve the issue of a student who wanted to go to a secondary school wearing a headscarf, the Ministry of Education, and therefore the government, amended the disciplinary regulations, allowing students who want to cover their heads to go to school wearing ‘bonnets and bandanas’…

The government, while trying to ‘solve a problem’, caused a mess…

While there was already a tense environment in Turkey and it somehow affected Northern Cyprus, the amendment to the disciplinary regulation added more tension on top of it.

An issue that needed to be resolved at school has turned into a bizarre situation that does not satisfy anyone in the hands of the government, which is unable to demonstrate any problem-solving skills.

Today, the government, taking into account the main opposition CTP’s proposal in parliament, withdrew the regulation.

The Prime Minister, who said that the well-being our children take priority over anything, said, “While drafting this regulation, we did not aim to divide or cause tension in the public, or to create discord amongst our children. This was not what we had in mind.”

In other words, the Prime Minister admits that they could not foresee what is happening today while they were working on the regulation.

This is the main problem of this government: such weaknesses as ‘not knowing its people’, ‘not being able to foresee what might happen’, ‘doing the wrong things’, ‘not caring’…

The same thing keeps happening; they take some sort of action and then they end up taking a step back.

How many steps have they taken back, so far? Are there no lessons learnt?

Don’t the members of the government live in this country?

Don’t they know about the laws, statutes, customs and regulations of this country?

Don’t our Prime Minister and ministers know the people of this country?

Haven’t they learnt what the people of this country are furious about, what they find unacceptable?

Do they not realize that actions contradicting with the Constitution and existing laws will be rejected by the judiciary? Don’t their lawyers tell them this? Do they not consult with, or listen to their lawyers?

Do they do every odd job on the basis of, ‘what if it works’?

Or, do they say, “These people will yell and shout and then forget about it all, so let’s do as we please”?

First, make the ‘Regulation on Rules and Discipline to be followed in Secondary Schools and Secondary Education Institutions (Amendment)’, then withdraw it as if it is an accomplishment.

Is this a tactic whereby they deliberately lose a donkey, pretend as though they find it and then make everyone happy?

Actually, this amendment was a bizarre solution plan that did not satisfy any of the parties involved.

The government’s withdrawal of the regulation was welcomed positively by many, but what about the process leading up to that positive step?

When we look at the discussions that have been going on for the past few days, the unrest in two of our public schools, the situation the children were dragged into, the exams that could not be held etc., it is like all of this added insult to injury.

Despite the Prime Minister’s statement regarding the ‘withdrawal of the regulation’, the Minister of Transport shared a post on his social media account, emphasizing that the Council of Ministers has not yet approved a proposal to withdraw the regulation, and urged people to hold their cries for victory… The parties in government have such strange ways of acting; tomorrow they may come up with an even stranger decision and action… Who knows if they will take a step back from that too…

The government keeps doing these kinds of things. Isn’t it also this government that raised the road tax in violation of the law, stepped back after the People’s Party filed a lawsuit, and then withdrew the raise entirely?

Why would you take an action that will be rejected by the judiciary?

A while ago, the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers applied to the court for the government’s ‘decision that will allow left-hand drive vehicles in our traffic’ and obtained an interim order…

Remember, in the last days of 2024, five public sector unions filed a lawsuit at the Constitutional Court against the ‘Decree Law on the Regulation of the Prohibition of Strikes in Essential Services’…

I can give more and more examples… Opposition parties and non-governmental organizations constantly have to resort to the judiciary to stop the government.

After taking a step back, they do not say ‘We made a mistake, we apologize’… When they correct their mistakes, they pretend as though they have done a good job.

Governments should both obey the law and be perceptive about matters of public sensitivity.

Why do you make an action that you will take a step back from later? How many times are you going to make your people suffer from similar things? Do you needs guards that will hold you back from making mistakes?
